Refiners, jewellers and pawn shops deduct margin for refining, assay, handling and profit, and their offers vary widely between one counter and the next.
Design, brand, stones, provenance and condition are ignored entirely by the calculation. A signed piece, or one with real gemstones, can be worth a multiple of its metal.
Stones, clasps and movements must be deducted from the weight before it is priced, and only the remaining metal is worth anything at melt.
Accuracy, delays and outages
The spot price comes from a third-party provider and can be delayed, interrupted or wrong at source. Every page carries a freshness badge stating how old the figure is.
We price whatever karat or fineness you enter. Plating, gold filling and false stamps cannot be detected by a web page. Only an assay or an XRF test settles what an item contains.
